There is a very similar process like sandblasting called shot peening. Shot peening also uses compressed air as power, but the media' contains metallic shots or sometimes ceramic or glass shots(0.1~2.0mm diameter). Compare with sandblasting, shot peening's media carries more momentum. The main purpose of this process is not the outlooking but to relieve tensile stresses formed from the previous mechanical process and prevent surface cracking. It is widely used in forging, casting and welding industry. In plain language, shot peening does not aim to give a better looking but to make a harder and longer-lasting part surface.
