TIG welding vs. MIG welding

TIG welding

TIG welding (TIG welding) is a kind of welding method with pure Ar as shielding gas and tungsten as the electrode. TIG welding wire is supplied in a straight strip of a certain length (usually 1M).

Using pure tungsten or activated tungsten (thorium tungsten, cerium tungsten, zirconium tungsten, lanthanum tungsten) as inert gas arc welding electrodes, using the arc between the tungsten electrode and the workpiece to melt the metal and form the weld. The tungsten electrode does not melt in the welding process and only acts as an electrode. At the same time, argon or helium is fed into the nozzle of the welding torch for protection. Additional metals can be added as needed.

Advantage

The main advantage of TIG welding method is that it can weld a wide range of materials, including workpieces with a thickness of 0.6mm and above, and materials include alloy steel, aluminum, magnesium, copper and its alloy, gray cast iron, various bronze, nickel, silver, titanium and lead. The main application field is to weld workpieces with thin and medium thickness, which are used as root weld beads on thicker sections.

 

MIG welding (GMAW)

MIG welding, i.e. GMAW, is a welding method of GMAW with AR and other inert gases as the main shielding gas, including pure AR or AR gas mixed with a small amount of active gas (such as O2 below 2% or CO2 below 5%). MIG welding wire is wound in layers or discs.

This welding method uses the burning arc between the welding wire and the workpiece as the heat source, and the gas emitted by the torch nozzle protects the arc for welding.

The commonly used shielding gases for GMAW are argon, helium, carbon dioxide or a mixture of these gases. When argon or helium is used as shielding gas, it is called MIG welding; when the mixture of inert gas and oxidizing gas (oxygen, carbon dioxide) is used as shielding gas, or when the mixture of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide + oxygen is used as shielding gas, it is called MAG welding.  

Advantage

The main advantage of GMAW is that it is convenient to weld in various positions, and it also has the advantages of fast welding speed and high deposition rate. GMAW can be applied to most of the main metals, including carbon steel and alloy steel. GMAW is suitable for stainless steel, aluminum, magnesium, copper, titanium, pickaxe and nickel alloy. This welding method can also be used for arc spot welding.
