To reduce the brittleness of steel parts, the quenched steel parts are kept warm for a long time at a suitable temperature higher than room temperature but lower than 710 C° and then cooled. This process is called tempering. In general, the higher the tempering temperature is, the lower the final hardness is resulted in. Quench-tempering is the most popular method to obtain the best cutting performance of steel.
